Prime Number Magazine Nominates Filed-Down Sights for a Pushcart Prize!
Filed-Down Sights — Pushcart Prize Nomination
Filed-Down Sights — Pushcart Prize Nomination. I am over the moon, my Dear Readers. Why, you ask? Because my short story Filed-Down Sights has been nominated for the prestigious 2021 Pushcart Prize! Originally published by Press 53, this hard-hitting appeared in Prime Number Magazine (April, 2021). I am honoured by the nomination, and so grateful to the Press 53 editors for having faith in my work. Moreover, I owe a particular debt of gratitude to Kevin Watson, Editor-in-Chief of Press 53. As a result of his wise and gentle editorial comments, this story emerged with its edges honed and sharp.
The Story…
Filed Down Sights is the tale of a hard woman, a one-eyed dog, a thief, a revolver, and memory. This story is the third in a triptych intertwining the lives of two lovers, Bonnie and Dmitri. The other two stories in the trilogy are A Breach in the Wall (Dream Noir, April, 2020) and Old Talk (Dillydoun Review, December 2020).
What is the Pushcart Prize?
Each year, Pushcart Press announces the prestigious Pushcart Prizes. The Pushcart Prize is unique, because nominations are submitted by small presses. Entries come from editors of Journals, LitMags, ‘Zines, and Reviews scattered across the USA. As a result, the entries represent a diverse slice of American literature. The Pushcart Prize seeks to honor the best “poetry, short fiction, essays or literary whatnot” published by indie presses over the previous year. I love it that they honor literary Whatnot! Editors may submit up to six works chosen from the calendar year. Each year, winners of the Pushcart Prize are published in an annual compilation of the award-winning entries.
Bill Henderson established the Pushcart Press publishing house in 1972. Since then, Pushcart Press has become renowned for its Pushcart Prize. Moreover, Pushcart Press has been named one of the USA’s “most influential publishers.” Publishers Weekly honored Pushcart Press with a 1979 Carey Thomas Prize for publisher of the year.
